Our Story

We offer a variety of courses and workshops, all aimed at beginners. The courses are all very interactive and the idea is that you leave the course with practical knowledge that you can actually use!! Left handed students are also welcome, even if you've been told that you can't do calligraphy. CALLIGRAPHY COURSES: Italics - beginners course (most suitable for complete beginners) Gothic Black Letter - beginners course (nice follow up to the Italics course, but also good for beginners) Fraktur - beginners course (nice follow up to the Italics course, but also good for beginners) These courses are 10 hours each, and can be split into weekly lessons of between 1.5 to 2 hours (you can split it up to suit you) These courses all cover lower case, upper case and layout. You will also be given all sorts of information to help you buy the correct pen, ink and any other materials. We don't recommend that you buy a pen before the course but rather use an inexpensive calligraphy lettering koki (about R45). You are taught to write using graph paper, and then graduate to unlined white paper (using pencil lines which are later erased). You are also taught how to do proper layout for birthday cards, inspirational quotes, etc. For kids and teenagers we recommend a shorter version consisting of 3 x 2 hour lessons (we only take kids from about 10 years up as they need a basic understanding of writing before attempting calligraphy) HAND LETTERING COURSES: Hand Lettering and Design Course - this is a beginners course where you learn the basics of decorative cursive and capitals, banners, wreaths, layout, etc. (examples can be found in the Hand Lettering photo album on this page) You will also learn how to use brush markers and how to write in various modern styles. These courses are 10 hours each, and can be split into weekly lessons of between 1.5 to 2 hours (you can split it up to suit you) For kids and teenagers we recommend a shorter version consisting of 3 x 2 hour lessons (kids of all ages are welcome) WORKSHOPS: I offer various short workshops covering topics such as Beginners Brush Lettering, Advanced Brush Lettering, Card Making, etc. Workshops are usually about 3.5 hours long and take place on both weekdays and weekends. For an extra fee private or group classes and workshops can be held anywhere in the Johannesburg/Pretoria area.
