The first ever in South Africa
Education, training, infrastructure, job creation, poverty alleviation, support through footwear manufacture
Specialty School · Business Service · Community College
The school was started in Johannesburg by Footwear Designer Glyn Giani and quickly expanded to Pretoria and Cape Town. With over 500 students in the last seven years the tuition was taken over by the Julonetix Group. Scince November 2017 control was taken back and put under the management of Glyn Giani who is again giving it his personal attention and vision.
A new branch and concept was recently opened in Bothas Hill, midway between Pietermaritzburg and Durban in partnership with Footwear Infrastructure Systems. This concept includes a retail space with a small hand craft shoe factory. Here we are piloting footwear manufacture as a part of the school and will have it up and running in Centurion Pretoria and in Sandton, Johannesburg during 2018.
This concept can now support students with small batch manufacturing and development. Students who have completed the design training can now also learn the finer details of manufacturing shoes by hand with a minimal financial input. It also provides support in terms of materials and components as well as development.
Technical Footwear Design Course
We have spent the last three years assisting the M&FP SETA to develop a two year Diploma in Footwear Design which should be registered with the QCTO in 2018. Once this is done we will be able to offer this as an accredited course.
In the meantime, because there is no such qualification registered on the NQF we offered this courses as a PRIVATE CERTIFICATE in footwear design which is a skills course and is not accredited. From February 2018 these certificates will be accompanied by a seperate L2 certificate in pattern engineering from the M&FP SETA for the pattern engineering work done in this course.
Handbag Design and Manufacture (Durban only)
This is strictly a skills course accomanied by a PRIVATE CERTIFICATE in handbag design and manufacture.
L2 Operators Training in either clicking, closing or making
Each of these courses which cover the manufacturing of shoes and operation of machinery in these variouse departments are M&FP Seta accredited courses and a certificate will be issued by them.
Glyn Giani started a career in Fashion in 1985 when completing his Diploma in Fashion Design at the GFD academy of design. After working in the industry for 5 years he did his BCompt articles he by pure chance ended up in the footwear industry which would change his life forever.
This walk began with an apprentice design job at the Bolton Footwear Group during which period he did an advanced Diploma in Footwear and footwear materials technology through LIRI/ Rhodes University and then an Advanced Diploma in Footwear Design at ARS Sutoria Italy and some tuition at Bally of Switzerland.
Returing from Italy Glyn designed for brands like Bally of Switzerland, Watson, Grasshopper, Omega, Groundcover, Step-on-Airs, Pitbull, Fram and many more.
In 2009 Glyn realised that there is a dire shortage of footwear design, technology and entrepreneural skills in the footwear industry and promtly started the Footwear Design and Technology School of SA and Footwear Infrastructure systems a footwear incubator.
